Details
Alpha Centauri (AC 2) has done several trips from Brisbane to Cape York, The Kimberley, Louisiades and South-East Asia. She was modified to give greater headroom (6'4"), a large, walk-in pantry, lots of internal storage and more deck lockers for general stowage. The galley boasts a wall oven, a four-burner stove with griller, a double sink, plus a day-fridge, freezer and vegetable crisper. There is a servery connecting the galley to the saloon, so the chef need not feel separated from the guests, nor claustrophobic.
Being a Crowther... AC 2 sails well in light airs as she is light weight being constructed entirely of foam/epoxy with Kevlar and double bias glass. Easily handled by husband and wife, only one person is needed on deck whilst passage making. The saloon has 6 hatches which provide excellent flow-through ventilation. It has a dining table to seat 5 standard, but using the fold up cockpit table and deck chairs she has comfortably accommdated 10.
The Mastervolt inverter provides 240v power at 1200 watts to make life easy. The comfortable saloon seating can convert to a sea berth if required. The nav/chart station with HF and VHF is located in the saloon. This area has bi-fold doors connecting to the cockpit, making for easy access and a great party area.
Fresh water is provided from 260ltr storage and a Spectra 150 water maker with Z Brane (this means no pickling), for easy maintenance.
AC 2 is powered by 2 x 30hp Lombardini Diesel engines with shaft drive to folding props. At 1,800rpm using 1 engine, she motors at 5 knots using 3 litres per hour. The maximum speed under power is 9 knots.
A 110Ah alternator (through a Belmar smart charger), as well as 3 tilting solar panels on the davits (via Solarex smart charger) power the batteries.
The deck layout (apart from the halyards) is operated from the helm position, meaning that tacking can be done by one person and the auto pilot and the boat is easily sailed by a short-handed crew. With kick up rudders, the yacht can be beached.
